What makes houseplants turn toward the light?

Growth hormones called auxins makes houseplants turn toward the light.

When light falls on one side of a plant, the auxins tend to concentrate on the shaded side, causing the cells on that side to grow longer.

As a result, the plant gradually leans toward the light.

This bending movement in response to an outside stimulus is known as tropism; bending in response to sunlight is called heliotropism.
