Boris Karloff was working on Graft (1931), in which Karloff played a murderer, when director James Whale asked him to do a screen test for Frankenstein (1931). Whale spotted Karloff in the Universal commissary.
Divine’s real name was Harris Glenn Milstead. He was born in Baltimore in 1946 and was a high school friend of John Waters, with whom he made several films. Divine died in 1989. His last film with Waters was Hairspray (1988), in which Divine played a housewife and mother.
Franz Waxman wrote the music for Universal’s Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers serials in the 1930s. It is actually the same score he wrote for The Bride of Frankenstein (1935), often recycled in low-budget Universal productions.
